Summer at the foot of the Canadian Rockies is as sweet as it is fleeting. One day it’s here, the next you’re watching as the leaves change and snow is in the long range forecast. We want to help you make the most of the rest of this summer, so we’re sharing a few of our favourite tips for having an amazing summer day in Hinton.

First: coffee. In case you haven’t heard, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and Hinton has some incredible restaurants for you to fuel up at before you head into the sunshine for a day of adventures. From table service to grab-and-go options, there’s something for early risers and sleepyheads alike.

Did you remember your to-go mug? A morning walk along the Beaver Boardwalk is doubly enjoyable with a second cup of joe. This freshwater boardwalk is one of Hinton’s greatest treasures, and while it’s a wonderful place for a stroll any time of day, mornings are extra special. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and if you’re lucky, you’ll have a front row seat to some beavers at work.

Next, head to Jasper East. This charming resort cabin village is nestled just outside the east gate of Jasper National Park. Drop in to the General Store and browse their selection of locally made artwork, pottery, jewelry and more. Visit with the roving artist, and stay for lunch at Folding Mountain Brewery – the food is great, the beer is cold, and the patio has the best view around.

Back in town, swing by the disc golf course with a stop by the Tourist Information Centre to pick up a set of discs. Whether you’re a seasoned disc golf pro or completely new to the game, you’re in for a treat. Our disc golf course is located across from the HMBA golf course and features 18 baskets. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear as the course winds through some of Hinton’s beautiful forest.

Summer brings with it the best fruits and vegetables of the year! Fill your basket at the Hinton Farmer’s Market with fresh, delicious and locally grown produce. You might be surprised at the abundant varieties we can grow here!

As the afternoon winds down and you start thinking about what’s for supper, you have some tough decisions to make! Will you take some of that fresh farmer’s market haul home and get to work in the kitchen, maybe picking up a fresh cut of meat from the butcher and a bottle of wine from one of our local liquor stores along the way? Or will you let someone else do the cooking? Hinton is home to restaurants serving up a wide variety of cuisines. There’s something for everyone, and you might have to come back to try them all.

If you’re lucky to be in town on a clear night, cap off your day with a trip to Athabasca Riverfront Park after the sun goes down for an incredible view of the night sky. Watch for shooting stars, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the northern lights!
